The National Coalition for Dignity and Amnesty for Immigrants is a grassroots coalition of labor, community and faithbased
organizations with a large immigrant and undocumented immigrant base. It was formally established in April 1999 to put an end to the exploitation and oppression suffered by undocumented workers.
It is estimated in 8.5 million the number of undocumented immigrants in the USA today. This migration is due to factors of economic survival or political violence in countries of origin, but also to heavy recruitment of workers for lowpaid, backbreaking jobs in the receptor country. We condemn the policies of the USA that cause poverty and/or violence in poor countries and then limit the ability of their people to survive elsewhere. This forced migration is also an effective way to control labor, which has become a very precious commodity in the global era. While the economic and demographic realities of the USA and its need of workers are hidden to public debate, immigrant workers recruited by American employers are
scapegoated as "illegals" who "break the law".
The purpose of the Coalition is to build a strong movement for immigrant labor and human rights, led and organized by immigrants. Our demands are: a) Respect for the basic human rights of immigrants, the indigenous, and the poor; b) Right to legal residency for immigrant workers; c) A halt to deportations, raids and border militarization and violence f) Fair wages and labor rights for all workers, including the undocumented; g) Support of Bilingual education.
Our first campaign calls for reforming immigration laws so a legalization process is established for undocumented immigrants already living here, family reunification and future migration flows. Our legislative proposal, the FREEDOM ACT, is based upon these principles. It is the only known proposal for immigration reform developed by immigrants themselves. As capital is free to move all over the world, then labor should be free to move.
