Tell JPMorgan Chase you won’t Bank with a company that ignores tobacco farmworker exploitation

JP Morgan Chase is one of the lead banks in a consortium of lenders that provides $498 million dollars in credit to Reynolds American, one of the largest tobacco companies in the US. While Reynolds American and JP Morgan Chase make billions, tobacco farmworkers continue to suffer serious human rights abuses in the fields. Although Reynolds does not directly employ these farmworkers, they determine the terms for contract growers which directly affects the living and working conditions of farmworkers.

Other large banks such as Wachovia and Citibank are also Reynolds lenders. Consider moving your money to a local credit union!

Reynolds American and JP Morgan Chase have the ultimate responsibility and financial resources to ensure safe and humane working conditions for tobacco farmworkers.

As a major lender to Reynolds, Chase has the stature and resources to convince Reynolds to improve conditions for tobacco farmworkers. Since May 12, 2010 FLOC has been asking Chase to use their influence to push Reynolds to address farmworker exploitation.  To date Chase has refused to take any action.

On March 18th, we again hit almost 200 branches, coinciding with a large demonstration outside of Chase HQ in NYC! Help us build for the next round of actions as we continue to expose Chase's irresponsible policies.

All you need is a few people and the Chase Campaign flyer and you can publicize Chase's relationship with Reynolds in a matter of a few hours. Most of the time, you can reach a lot of people without even leaving your home! Use email, facebook, twitter, etc. to let people know about the Reynolds/Chase campaign. Then organize a team to leaflet your local Chase Bank branch!  For more information, contact us at flocnc@floc.com

We will continue to organize actions outside of Chase Bank branches throughout the campaign to encourage people who support justice for  tobacco farmworkers to close their Chase bank accounts, cancel Chase credit cards, and pledge not to bank with Chase until Reynolds agrees to work with FLOC or Chase severs financial ties with Reynolds. These consumer actions are being taken to  influence the financial giant to use its stature and power to convince Reynolds American to end human rights abuses in the tobacco fields.

Sample Script When Closing Your Account

(In most cases the agent will ask you why you are closing the account, but if not asked it is important that you say why)

"I am closing my account in support of tobacco farmworkers who are fighting to improve their deplorable living and working conditions. These workers, represented by the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), pick tobacco for RJ Reynolds. Reynolds denies responsibility for the worker’s pay and working and living conditions and has refused to speak with FLOC. I learned that JP Morgan Chase is one of Reynolds biggest lender. Although I was satisfied with your company, I can't continue doing business with you unless Chase makes an effort to get Reynolds to talk to FLOC and the workers.   Please share this message with your management. Thank you."
